The next day, Maria got up a couple hours early without the need for an alarm. That gave her enough time to write a report and submit it before leaving home and she still arrived in the office before most of the people on her floor.

She closed her office door and began her research, using a facial reconstruction program to try and approximate the security officer’s appearance. She wasn’t an artist, but she was able to get something that looked similar enough thanks to the suite of tools at her disposal.

She had barely kicked off a search through the corporate database when she received a message from Agent Williams requesting her presence once again on the twenty-sixth floor. While it was not normal protocol, she’d expected this, and it was part of why she wanted to submit her report early and enter it into corporate records.

On her way out, Maria took the precaution of placing a small sticky note to the inside of the frame and then manually locking her office door. It seemed trivial compared to the amount of security on her terminal, but every little bit of resistance could help. And at least this way she’d know if anyone entered her office.

On her way to the elevators, she saw Mr. Moreno already in his office, but engaged with someone. She couldn’t see who it was around the corner, but her manager was slowly drumming his fingers on the surface of his desk—never a good sign. If he was preoccupied, he wouldn’t have the opportunity to enter her office while she was called away. Not that she expected him to be working against her—it wasn’t his style—but she had learned to suspect everyone. One small slip could cause disaster that could damage an entire family. She had learned that lesson all to well in her youth.
